What is cashmere?

Once you've experienced once how wonderful cashmere feels, you will be addicted. But, what exactly is cashmere and where does it come from? Read on and find all the answers about this soft and luxurious material.

Which animal does cashmere come from?

Månestråle’s cashmere yarn comes from goats that live in the mountains of Inner Mongolia. The temperatures in the area fluctuate between 25 ° to -40 ° C and the goats' fur is temperature-regulating so they can stay cool in the summer months and warm in the long Mongolian winter. Precisely for this reason, cashmere wool is a wonderful material to wear all year round as it keeps you cool in the heat and warm in the cold. During the cold months, the goat develops hair that is long enough to be spun and made into cashmere, which is when the fabric is produced.

How is cashmere made?

Cashmere goat hair is divided into short and long strands, with the longest strands being the ones of the finest quality. This is because the long fibers grip onto each other better, which minimizes fluff and loose threads. Whether you spin your wool yarn with long or short strands of hair, it still leads to a material that is 100% cashmere. Yet, the downside of short strands of hair is that more hair will stick out, while the final material will shed more and will not be as soft as the one made from the longer strands of hair.
It can sometimes be difficult as a consumer to know the differences between the various cashmere qualities, but as with everything else, you usually get what you pay for. A cheaper cashmere knit, from e.g. a high-street chain, will typically be made of cashmere yarn with short strands of hair, to keep their products’ relatively lower prices. The wool we use at Månestråle, is classified as superior, as it is the finest and softest quality available.

Why should you wear cashmere?

Once you've worn a Månestråle cashmere, you will not want to wear anything else. There is no wool that is like cashmere. Cashmere is super soft and light, while being cooling and warming depending on the temperature. Cashmere is overall a luxurious material and the perfect choice for the modern woman who wants a timeless and sustainable style that stays classic every season. At the same time, cashmere, at least the high quality one, has an incredibly long lifespan, which means you can keep your cashmere knit for many years. Furthermore, an added benefit of cashmere is that it is self-cleaning and therefore you do not need to wash it as often. Instead, you can air it outside where the humidity has a beneficial effect on the cashmere fibers. Intrigued? Is cashmere warm?

Cashmere is both warm and cold as it tempers as needed. This means that it keeps you warm when you are cold and cool when you are hot. Cashmere is mistaken by many as an exclusively winter material, when in reality it is one of the best things to wear all year round, precisely because it adapts to your environment’s conditions. In Scandinavia, there is nothing better than a bonfire on the beach on a summer evening while you’re wrapped in a fluffy knit cardigan in cashmere wool.
In the cold months, the advantage of cashmere is that it is super soft and comfortable to wear, but also that it lets your skin breathe. Since cashmere is both warm and light, you can easily have several layers on without feeling restricted and heavy.
The fine cashmere yarn Månestråle uses is perfect for both summer and winter, and our products are available in both casual and chic styles.

The quality of cashmere

There is no genuine and fake cashmere, but there is a big difference in the quality of cashmere. The natural wool is valued based on its weight and so the price of cashmere wool is set in the same way as it is with gold, by weight and carat. This makes perfect sense, since we also consider cashmere as a precious metal in the knitting world.
Since Månestråle started, as one of the first to produce cashmere in Denmark, many others have joined the market, some of which offer more unsophisticated products that usually look very similar, due to the lack of effort and time put into their design and production. In contrast, we see it as our duty at Månestråle to stand out positively and prove that even though cashmere products are natural and timeless, there are a lot of details in the craft, which can make them stand out and offer you that luxurious experience that they ought to offer.
Månestråle cashmere quality is the best in the world. If you have tried Månestråle cashmere products in the past, you have probably noticed how different they are from many other wool products. At Månestråle, we produce our cashmere products to be a good investment for you, especially in the long run, so our knits are designed to stay in your wardrobe for years to come with the same excellent sensation against your skin. Therefore, at Månestråle we only use cashmere of superior quality.

Good Cashmere Standard

Our cashmere has recently been awarded the Good Cashmere Standard, which follows three main principles: to promote animal welfare, to support cashmere farmers in running a sustainable business and to protect the environment - three principles that mean a lot to us. With a Månestråle knit, you therefore not only get an excellent cashmere - but also a conscious product that makes a difference.
